Ladakh, known as the land of high passes, is part of the
state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and often referred to
as "Little Lhasa" due to the similarity in its culture
and landscape with early Tibet. Ladakh is one of the
least explored region of India and did not open up to
tourists until the mid 70s. This land is renowned for
its friendly people, diverse, mystical and untouched
culture, snow covered peaks and magnificent lakes.

Framed by two of the world's most imposing mountain
ranges, the Karakorams to the North, the Himalayas to
the south and lies crossways to two other, the Ladakh
range and the Zanskar range. East Ladakh is mainly
Buddhist and is culturally similar to Tibet while west
Ladakh is predominantly Muslim.
Ladakh has approximately 13 Gompas, the most important
being Hemis. |
